Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) are a sunfish with a widespread range throughout North America, east of the Rocky Mountains. They are one of the most widely recognized North American fish and are often the first catch experienced by people beginning to fish. Bluegill are one of the most important forage fish throughout their range and are a staple prey item throughout almost all stages of their life for a wide variety of predatory fish and other aquatic animals. Bluegill will continue to develop their color into adulthood and make a beautiful addition to large aquariums and ornamental ponds.  Origin: Bluegill available through this listing are hatchery bred and raised.  Please keep in mind that these fish were bred and raised in outdoor ponds and some may have minor cosmetic imperfections such as an imperfect fin or old scar. *We can occasionally supply field-collected bluegill via commercial fisheries. Please contact directly if you’d be interested in wild stock.*  Care Level: Beginner. Diet: Omnivorous, but primarily carnivores feeding on various worms, shrimp, crustaceans, insects, snails, and small fish. They will readily accept prepared foods/pellet foods.  Adult Size: Up to 12” is possible. 6”-10” is more typical.  pH: 6.5-8.5 Water Temp: 60-85F is ideal in a captive setting, however they can tolerate temperatures outside of these ranges.
