After a full day of voladores performing their ancient ritual of flying for the city patron saintÕs festival, there is a fireworks performance for the local residents to watch in Cuetzalan, Mexico, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023. The Danza de los Voladores, a centuries-old indigenous ceremony, performers climb a 100-foot pole and secure themselves to a platform at the top by tying a rope around their hips. Then they launch themselves into the air, spinning around the pole upside down while twirling to the beat of drums and a flute. The pre-hispanic tradition has evolved over centuries but is still practiced in several Mexican states. The state of Puebla has hundreds of Voladores, or fliers, and in Puebla's city of Cuetzalan, dozens of Voladores troupes perform the ritual in the cityÕs main square on the weekends. While the voladores act draws tourists who visit Cuetzalan, many voladores have learned how to fly because itÕs part of their familyÕs identity Ð their parents and grandparents were voladores too.
