Smith's stainless steel backing plates for 80 Series rod holders are important to have under each and every rod holder used for heavy tackle fishing. Why? Because when a rod holder is under extreme load, regular nuts and washers can concentrate stress and cause spider cracking around your rod holder, or perhaps even tear through to cause severe gunnel damage. These backing plates evenly distribute mounting bolt pressure over 30 times more surface area than with standard washers alone.
