It’s early March. My friend Brad Wiegmann, a fishing guide on Beaver Lake near Springdale, has invited my son Zach and me to join him for some white-bass fishing. In just a few weeks, the whites will start their spawning migrations up the tributary streams that feed the lake. Thousands of fish will “run” from the main lake to gravel-bottomed riffles, where the females will lay their eggs and the males will fertilize them. On this day, however, the temperature is barely above freezing, and clouds hide the sun. The fish are still holding in deep water offshore.
