Hulk scored two goals in Atltico’s historic victory over the Copa Libertadores
A historic night for Atltico in the Copa Libertadores. With a 3-1 victory over Independiente del Valle, from Ecuador, in Mineiro, Galo broke the record and became the team with the most unbeaten record in continental tournament history. The winning goals were scored by the Hulk, twice, and Svio.
Atltico shared the record with Flamengo and Sporting Cristal, from Peru, both with 17 games. But, with that victory tonight, Alvinegro wrote with certainty in the history of the tournament.
The greatest unbeaten record in the history of Libertadores
River Plate (14 matches between 1977 and 1978) – In 1977 and 1978, River Plate rebuilt a long unbeaten streak, but saw Boca Juniors defeat Libertadores twice. The opponent, by the way, was responsible for beating him in the first match of 1977. Later, River won once and drew four times and failed to advance to the semi-final stage. The following year, the team left Independiente, LDU and El Nacional in the first round. In the semi-finals, they battled Boca and … Atltico. The Red-Black team managed, between 2020 and 2021, 17 matches equal to Sporting Cristal without a hitch, but with 12 wins and five draws (Peru won eight and nine draws). The Flamengo series started in the group stage 2020, with a 2-1 victory over Barcelona, Ecuador. In the round of 16, the team was awarded a penalty shootout by Racing after two draws. In 2021, Fla reached the final without defeat. Galo started the series in 2019 and has won 11 times and drawn seven. That year, Atltico had already been eliminated from the Libertadores group stage when they visited Zamora-VEN in Venezuela. A 2 to 1 comeback won the alvinegro Copa Sudamericanna team and established a series of unbeaten runs.
Out of the tournament in 2020, Galo returned to the competition in 2021. And he had a flawless campaign. The owner of the best performance in the group stage, eliminated the traditional youth of Boca Juniors and River Plate in the 16th stage and in the quarter-finals, respectively.
He then confronted Palmeiras. In the first game, Allianz Parque drew 0-0. On the way back, it was 1 to 1 in Mineiro and was handed a goalless draw as a home team.
This year, they started Group D with two wins (2-0 against Deportes Tolima-COL and 2-1 against Amrica) and two draws (1-1 against America and 1-1 against Del Valle-EQU). Tonight’s victory ensured Alvinegro’s record in the tournament.
