Australian authorities confiscate $1.5 million worth of cryptocurrencies from A Cryptocurrency scrgruppen

South Australian Police have arrested a person accused of drug trafficking and money laundering using cryptocurrencies on the dark web.

The police confiscated money, illegal drugs, electronic devices and cryptocurrencies worth $1.5 million belonging to the accused person.

A South Australian Police investigation, which began earlier in 2023, led to the seizures being made, along with the arrest of a 25-year-old man from the Adelaide Hills, whose identity has not been released, on suspicion of being involved in illicit drug trafficking on Dark web.

According to According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, police alleged that the accused used various profiles on the dark web to market several illegal drugs. Speaking about this topic, Detective Director Rice said:

“The investigation identified illicit activity on the dark web marketplace, attributed this activity to a real person in South Australia, identified and traced the cryptocurrency used in the crime, and ultimately led to a successful search and seizure operation.”

Superintendent Rice also said nitazine, which he described as a “highly toxic drug”, was among the drugs seized by police. According to the investigator, the nitazine, which weighs an estimated five kilograms, is the largest seizure in Australia so far.

There have been previous cases of the drug protonitazine being suspected of causing overdoses and playing a role in the death of a young man. However, Superintendent Rice noted that the dark web drug dealer had nothing to do with the death. The accused, who is currently detained, is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Meanwhile, there have been several cases of cryptocurrencies being used for criminal activities on the dark web. In July, a New Jersey resident, John Michael Mosbach, paid a dark web hitman 40 bitcoins in May 2016 (worth $20,000 at the time) to kill a child who was to testify against him in a child pornography case. Mosbach was sentenced to six years and six months in prison.

Another woman from Nevada, Christy Lynn Filkins, Receive She was sentenced to five years in prison for hiring a dark web hitman site called Besa Mafia to kill her ex-husband. Filkins sent the site 12 bitcoins (worth about $5,000 at the time) to carry out the operation.
