This was circulated to the law school community on Monday, so there are no excuses for it being a visceral initial reaction that had to be rethought when the scope of the massacre became clear. I have the entire statement, and I’m happy to share it with you, but now I just want to introduce the first paragraph. I really have no words to describe how disgusting it is. It is both morally appalling and profoundly dishonest at the same time:

The Palestinians in Gaza are fighting against the Israeli colonial entity on an unprecedented scale. So far, they have bulldozed the barbed wire and walls that kept them trapped hostage in Gaza, the world’s largest open-air prison. They captured Israeli occupation soldiers and reclaimed some of their lands from Israel. This guerrilla war, while not without heavy costs for Israelis and Palestinians, is the first time Palestinians have fought occupying Israel in recent years. Although Palestinians understand the Israeli regime’s brutal response, they still continue to fight for their lives because, in reality, the war has been going on for the past seven decades. As one Gazan resident poignantly said: “Today, we are either free or killed, and both are better than being in cages.”
