At this busy fishing dock in Puerto Montt, Chile, fishers unload crates of wild-caught reineta, a pomfret fish species, load the frozen catch into delivery trucks and repack boats with ice to return immediately to sea. Because much of the water close to the Puerto Montt region is heavily compromised due to industrial salmon farming, some fishing boats travel 30 hours to access areas where fish are present, and others may spend upwards of 20-30 days at sea to attain a large enough catch. According to one of the fishers, at least one kilometre (0.6 miles) around a salmon farm is a dead zone for anything living from the top of the water to the bottom of the sea.
